Highland residents will see their property taxes increase after city officials voted for a hike to pay for road improvements.
The Highland City Council voted 3-2 this week in favor of the tax increase. The Daily Herald reports that some residents spoke before the vote in opposition to the tax, and told officials they should look at cutting city salaries instead. The annual property tax for a home valued at $260,000 will increase by $230.
The Highland Transportation Committee says many city roads are in need of repair and that it could cost about $600,000 a year to improve them. Transportation officials say the total cost for repairs is about $20 million.
